3 Reason to Network…And One is Not Making Connections

While a majority of filled positions are due to “who you know,” connecting is not the point of networking.

How often are you looking for a new job? In 48 Days to the Work You Love: Preparing for the New Normal, Dan Miller shares that “the average job is 3.2 years in length, meaning the average person will have 14 to 16 different jobs in his/her working lifetime.”

Networking isn’t a 3.2 year occurrence. It’s not a date you can set on your calendar. You can’t attend the local Chamber event once a year to show your face. It needs to be an ongoing process.

So, although every 3.2 years you may need to use a connection to find new employment, what happens during that in-between period?

Since When is Showing Up Enough?

Five young boys show up for a wrestling tournament. There are four places awarded. Each goes home with an award. How does that happen?

Or better yet, let’s apply this to adults.

We attend a large conference. During the event, we look around.

There are people are on their phones, checking Twitter and responding to emails. Some people are on their computers. Looking at the screens in front of you, some are taking notes, while others are on Facebook or playing Solitaire. Others are writing in notebooks, mainly taking notes or simply doodling.

At the end, we got a pretty sheet of paper: Certificate of Participation.

How to Apply 3 Teamwork Principles to Faith

Have you searched for the spotlight?

If you have ever wanted to be the best in your industry, I am sure the thought has crossed your mind.

It’s inevitable, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you are seeking to further the Kingdom, it’s ok to put a face to the name.

In the end, Jesus is the name above all names. Think of it like teamwork and Jesus is the boss; we need to make him look good in order for us to get that promotion…to heaven.

Attitude Changes Everything

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always decided how things were going to go when it came to interactions with others.

If my boss emailed me that she wanted to meet with me tomorrow, I would spend every next moment thinking about all the things I could have done wrong and how I would explain them. Most of the time, I would lose sleep over trying to figure it out. When I would get to the meeting, she would just want to talk about the next project she was thinking about assigning to me.  I had myself worked up because I couldn’t think of the positive things she may want to talk to me about, only the negative.

We can approach life in two ways, expecting the negatives or excited for the positives. Basketball coach John Wooden said, “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” Starting with the right attitude can change the path of each day.

Why You Need to Think Before You Post

I recently had a ceremonial purging of my Facebook friends and people I follow on Twitter.

Why?

I was tired of suffering from the emotional vampires and ignorant people out there.

Sorry, that may have been a bit harsh. The fact is, I want…no, I need to surround myself with positive people. The things I see and read affect my attitude.

And I know I’m not the only one who thinks this way. Continue Reading…
